WE CAN STOP MONSANTO IF WE



Boycott Their Products


We can stop Monsanto if we organize and take action. They are the primary contributor to genetically modified foods that are potentially dangerous to our health and may be contributing to the explosion of chronic health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. Their goal is to make more money and if the products do not sell they will likely stop making them. Your money is important to their continued success so if you do not want to eat genetically modified foods keep your money in your pocket. Problem is the GMO foods are not labeled so people are purchasing them and eating them without any knowledge they may be putting themselves in danger.

So here is a list of the companies using Monsanto's products.

I know these are some of your favorites and I bet you did not know and cannot understand why some are using GMO products but they are. And even worse you do not know what component is modified so you are at their mercy. But you do not have to be. If you do not use their products at all you may reduce your risk and concern about their ingredients. This is call to action for all of us to help protect our food supply from the GMO fat cats who are making tons of money by producing products that are modified so that they are resistant to:
  • Pesticides
  • Insects
  • Animals
Ask yourself this, Do I want to eat a product that a bug or other mammals programmed to specifically target a food refuses to eat? Think about it for a minute a bug has the common sense not to eat it but we do every day. It will take more than writing and talking about it to stop the deluge of GMO products from being produced. When you look at the list above it seems the only way to stop them is to use your Purchasing Power to send the message.

So Get Up Get Moving and Share this list with your friends and family and encourage them to boycott these products cause...

FOOD DEMOCRACY NOW TEAM is ASKING US TO




Dear Reader, 
Right now President Obama and bureaucrats at the Food and Drug Administration are preparing to unleash genetically engineered salmon on the market. After years of controversial regulatory review, this past week the Obama administration cleared a final hurdle for AquaBounty’s GMO salmon to be approved at any moment.

Over the holidays, December 21st, 2012, FDA bureaucrats declared that AquaBounty’s GMO AquaAdvantage® salmon poses no “significant” risk to the environment. This recent FDA decision comes on top of the agency’s 2010 declaration that the GMO salmon were safe for humans to eat, despite no independent long-term studies. Once again, the FDA is putting corporate science over public health.

If approved, AquaBounty’s GMO salmon would be the first genetically engineered animal to be sold for human consumption and could appear in restaurants and grocery stores as early as 2013.

Right now the deadline for the comment period for GMO salmon is ending this Friday, April 26th, 2013. We need your help to get as many comments as possible, please make a comment and pass this on! Every voice counts!


Already biotech cheerleaders are hailing the FDA’s recent announcement as a first of many new approvals to come, which means that more genetically engineered, transgenic animals could be approved in the near future.

In case you haven’t heard, the AquaBounty GMO salmon has been genetically engineered in laboratories to allegedly grow twice as fast as wild salmon. If the Massachusetts-based company gets its way, its patented mutant fish will replace real fish as a new staple at sushi bars, seafood restaurants and supermarkets across America.
Straight from the pages of a science fiction novel, AquaBounty has inserted the genes of a Chinook salmon growth hormone and an “on-off” switch from the eelpout, into the eggs of Atlantic salmon, to make the GMO salmon grow faster than wild or farmed salmon.
Despite the company’s claims, critics remain skeptical that genetically engineered fish has any real benefits.

Once Again the FDA Ignores Serious Risks and Environmental Concerns
While AquaBounty claims its GMO salmon will only be raised in indoor, land-based facilities, environmentalists have real concerns if any accident were to take place. 

Scientific studies show that the release of just 60 GMO salmon could eradicate wild Atlantic salmon populations of 60,000 fish in less than 40 fish generations.
In an effort to overcome this, AquaBounty has built egg production facilities on Prince Edward Island in Canada and will then ship them to an indoor facility in Panama where they will be grown out. Once the GMO salmon are grown to maturity, they will be sold unlabeled in U.S. markets, if the Obama administration gets its way.

It is due to AquaBounty’s promise to only raise the GMO salmon in indoor, land-based pens that the Obama FDA has now given the mutant fish a thumbs up with its recently published Environmental Assessment (EA), claiming that the GMO salmon poses “no significant impact” on the environment.

In addition to land-based pens, AquaBounty claims it will only raise “sterile females”, but this is factually false since tests show that up to 5% of the GMO salmon are able to reproduce.

At the same time, leaked internal emails from the U.S. Department of Interior’s Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) reveal that the governments own scientists are dubious about the FDA’s own assessment.

In an email to a coworker, FWS geneticist Denise Hawkins wrote in 2010:
"I also agree ... that using [genetically sterile] fish is not foolproof. Maybe [the FDA] should watch Jurassic Park."

In addition, Hawkins criticized the FDA’s fantastical assessment of the ability of these GMO salmon to survive outside of the intended indoor pens, saying, “There is no data to support the claims of low survival in the event of escape, which... is a big concern.”


How will GMO salmon impact human health?

Because no independent, long-term scientific studies of AquaBounty’s patented salmon have been conducted, the human health impacts of GMO salmon are not currently known. Shockingly, the FDA is relying on scant scientific documents provided by AquaBounty itself. In fact, the FDA’s own assessment AquaBounty’s studies to determine whether GMO salmon are safe for human consumption states that the studies contain “technical flaws” and provide “insufficient data”.

For two of the studies submitted, AquaBounty used sample sizes so small that they have no scientific credibility, with only 12 fish tested for one study, while another study on possible allergic reactions in humans involved only 6 fish! Despite this scant evidence, the FDA is currently on the verge of approving the company's GMO salmon.

Serious questions remain about eating fish engineered to grow faster and how genetically manipulated traits can impact human health, especially that of our most vulnerable populations such as pregnant mothers and children.

WHAT IS THE VALUE OF A FIG?





Broiled Honeyed Figs with Sabayon


Fresh and dried figs are rich in fiber and high in iron boosting energy and promoting healthy blood.


Figs are usually available dried as fresh figs are easily damaged and have a very short shelf life.This delicious fruit contains good amounts of fiber,most of it soluble, which help prevents heart disease  Figs are a good source of several minerals and vitamin B6, with additional small amounts of a range of B vitamins, folate with several other minerals and vitamins. They are a concentrated source of potassium and are rich in calcium, magnesium and iron. They are also high in calories and should be eaten in moderation.

  • Contain sterols which help lower blood cholesterol.
  • Good source of natural energy and sugars.
  • Good source of potassium to prevent fluid retention.
  • Dried fruit is an excellent source of iron, for healthy blood and of calcium for bone density.
Preparation:
  1. 8 ripe figs halved
  2. 4 tbsp honey
  3. Leaves from 2 fresh rosemary sprigs finely chopped.
  4. 3 eggs
Broiled Honey Figs with Sabayon:
  1. Preheat the broiler to high. Arrange the figs, cut side up, on the broiler rack. Brush with half the honey and scatter over the rosemary
  2. Cook under the preheated broiler for 5-6 minutes or until just beginning to caramelize.
  3. Make the sabayon by lightly whisking the eggs with the remaining honey in large heatproof bowl, then set over a saucepan of simmering water. Use a handheld electric whisk beat the eggs and honey together for about 10 minutes or until pale and thick.
  4. Place 4 fig halves on 4 serving plates, add a generous spoonful of the sabayon and serve immediately.

ARE YOU SABOTAGING



Your Results?


Today we are going to talk about form versus weight. Observing many people at the gym it is clear that many of the members sacrifice form for ease or ego. My original thought was this was a gender issue but as I review my observations in my head I realize it is not. The error applies to both although in various ways. Either way it diminishes your results and slows your progress toward your weight loss or fitness goals. It usually results in frustration, lack of consistency and eventually submission to your current state of less than optimal health/fitness.

Range of Motion/Form

Watching someone, usually a male place 18 X 45 lbs on both sides of the leg press equalling 1620 lbs and move it all of 5 inches causes me to shake my head and pray they do not get hurt. There is no benefit in doing that whether it is the leg press, bicep curls, bench press or any other exercise. If you are not completing the full range of isolated motion you risk injury, and epic fail. The exercise are designed to have a specific range of motion for a reason. They isolate the target muscle and protect the rest of your body from injury. Even slight deviations that are not well planned for a specific reason put you at risk. Find someone who has experience and learn the correct range of motion.

Too Much Weight

Now I need to be honest this one is commonly a male issue but I have also seen some females make it as well. It is related to being able to complete the full range of motions as well and this is why I am addressing it in this order. This is simple if you can not complete the full range of motion with 70-80 percent of the repetitions you probably have too much weight and need to reduce it to level where you are able to. So let's say you are able to complete 10 reps then 8 of them should be done with the best form which means the full range of position with the correct posture. I encourage you to go for the extra 2 reps or so to complete the burn but incomplete and poor form should not be observed on 50% of the reps

Too Little Weight

This too is a common problem that is often associated with women but again I have seen men doing it as well. Many who attend the gym do so as much for the social component as the training component and as a result there is usually a great deal of chit chat which for me is..... well you already know. Chit Chatting during a break is one thing but when you are able to carry on a conversation while doing a set you may not be doing enough to build muscle. Too little weight does not stress the muscle to create the tiny tears required to set the body in repair mode building new muscle fibers. You need to add some weight so that the last few (money reps) are as close to impossible to complete as you can get.

Too Few Repetitions

Setting the number of repetitions prior to the set is a common practice even with those who know better but have not implemented the practice of going to failure. Everyone seems to talk about the "Burn", but lack the will to really experience it on every set of every routine. Clearly this is related to the paragraph above and is easily remedied in one of 2 ways. While in the middle of a set you may realize the weight is too light simply add repetitions until you go to failure. Another solution may be to stop and adjust the weight and continue immediately until failure. Either way you will achieve the burn you want and accelerate your progress by making one of the suggested adjustments.

Too Much Rest

This is a direct byproduct of the social atmosphere in many gyms. And now with the advent of the smartphone it is becoming worse with each day. The rest between sets is important so that you are able to complete the next set correctly. It allows your heart to slow down and speed up burning more fuel. However too much rest allows the muscle to relax, blood flow to decrease and decreases the number of routines you will do due to time. Keeping the muscle warm and and full of blood (pumped) will increase the likelihood of you reaching the burn/money reps with each set. Additionally, you can bet you are aggravating someone who is waiting to use the equipment or the space you are occupying. 

So for those of you who are already up and moving I encourage to adopt the tips I have shared and maximize the results of your hard work. I guarantee you will get the results you desire and maintain it over time. I applaud your hard work and encourage you to work smarter, and more efficiently. The results you desire are not as far as the seem.

HOW DO I INCREASE MY





 Lean Muscle ?


Burning Fat at rest is the goal and as I stated many times there is only one way to make this happen and that is to gain lean muscle. 1 lb of lean muscle will burn up to 500 calories per day while at rest. If you put on 10lbs of lean muscle you will burn up to 500 calories per day and 3500 per week. 3500 calories is equivalent to 1 lb of body fat. Adding lean muscle will also help with mobility and balance which are very important as we age. Remember you are either building muscle or losing muscle once you are past 28 years old. This goes for everyone.

So consciously and actively addressing this issue requires resistance training of some form since you can not take a pill or a shot or eat enough to gain lean muscle without resistance trainig. However it is important like anything else to constantly educate yourself so that you:

  • Do not hurt yourself or someone else.
  • Can maximize your efforts.
  • Address health concerns without increasing your risk.
Now that I am actually working at a gym I am paying more attention to the members than I ever did before. Although as a gym member for many years I realize that many need instruction if they are very going to make progress. There are way too many who put in a great deal of time and effort that is misdirected and unlikely to help them reach their goals. So pay attention to the following information which will guarantee you increase success.

Targeting a Specific Body Part for Fat Loss

For example you can not target a particular part of your body for fat loss. It just does not work that way. During my observations I believe I see more people using the abdominal machines as a major part of their routine. In fact many members never touch any other resistance device. I know they believe they are utilizing the correct devices to reach their goal of reducing their belly fat. However they are incorrect since most of us already have abdominal muscles but they are covered with fat. Increasing the lean muscle across your entire body will convert the entire body into a Fat Burning Machine. Remember 10 lbs of lean muscle burns 3500 calories per week and you are never going to put 10 lbs of muscle onto your stomach. It must be spread throughout the entire body.

Circuit Training
When done correctly this is not a bad way to workout and build lean muscle. However what I observe is people doing full body workouts on a regular basis. The pattern appears to me to be Monday,Wednesday and Friday. Let's cover another basic fact of muscle building. You build muscle by tearing down the muscle during the resistance training and  the remarkable machinery of our body rebuilds it. Simple as that. Not quite because in order for muscle to emerge larger and stronger several things are required. Here is the full equation:

Strength Training + Nutrients (Fuel & Water) + Rest = Lean Muscle.


You can not get there any other way. So what is the problem with the routine I described above. Well where is the rest. Your muscles require more than 48 hours to recover and grow. Aren't you sore for 2-3 days if you completed a rigorous routine. I know I am and I have been doing this for more than 25 years. You need to rest and  change the routine so that you get it. My recommendation is to target 2 body parts per workout so that you are not tearing down your muscles repeatedly without the rest required for it to grow. 
  • Monday - Chest and Shoulders
  • Wednesday - Legs 
  • Friday - Back and Arms
Another quick observation I wish to address is changing the routine so that you are continuously signaling the body to grow lean muscle. You may do this by changing one or more of the following components of your routine:
  • Range of Motion
  • Weight
  • Repetitions
  • Exercise
  • Pace
  • Order
This is enough for now and I strongly suggest those of you who are beginners take heed so that you may avoid the dreaded plateaus that plague all of us. For the veterans a little reminder does not hurt since all of us may find our comfort zone and relax. Remember growth begins outside of your comfort zone and implementing some of these techniques will take you there and propel you towards your goals. My suggestion is to take 1 step towards your dream and your dream will take 5 steps towards you. So Get Up Get Moving Take that Step Forward cause.......
