Over the last few years my wife and I have had many discussions concerning the state of health in our community particularly the number of people we see that are obviously not in the best of health. The visual evidence is clear and overwhelming as people are expanding horizontally. The levels of obesity are obvious and may be a direct result of the fast food and food supply industries.

As with any retail business, location is everything and vice versa people will likely patronize that which is in close proximity to where they live. Now when you also add in the convenience factor you will increase the likelihood that your business will thrive. Also consider the impact of marketing and very few choices even close to being considered healthy, you have created a monopoly of patrons. These businesses are right next door (location), they are quick to serve (convenience), they target your area (marketing), and there are no other choices unless you choose to cook for yourself. However if you choose to eat out you must be willing to leave your neighborhood if you want healthy choices.

No healthy choices on the front end where good nutrition may prevent what is in ample supply, medical facilities including clinics and dialysis centers, pharmacies on every corner, and doctor’s offices as well as several medical centers.  In fact the medical and pharmaceuticals are so prevalent they are now found in the mega supermarkets. Even in major supermarkets the healthy choices are limited to the perimeter of the supermarket. Once you venture into the middle aisles there are almost no healthy choices. Let me say that again once you travel into those aisles between the first and last aisles there very few healthy choices. If you do not believe take a slow look at the ingredients as they increase in volume and difficulty to pronounce.

So here is what it appears to me since I do not believe in coincidence. Most of what seems to be coincidence is not once you complete a closer examination of the subject. Let’s take a hard look at the location of retailers that are distributing fast fried preserved genetically modified foods and the location of pharmacies. Ask yourself have you ever been to the pharmacy and have it not be busy? Within one mile of my home there are 2.5 supermarkets, no health food stores or distributors of fruit and veggies other than the supermarket, yet there a total of 6 pharmacies. Count them 6 pharmacies for the same population that only requires 2.5 supermarkets. Coincidence I think not.

Do you think this is an accident? If so stop reading now. If you are willing to consider this proposal keep reading. As one of my mentors use to say, “Garbage in garbage out.” Problem is this data is real in my neighborhood and even worse in others. What if I told you there are studies that prove that when healthier choices are available at a reasonable cost people will make healthier choices. So why are certain communities not provided these healthier choices? There are many poor and rural communities that do not have even one supermarket but fast food and poor choices are everywhere.

Now I cannot prove this beyond providing some anecdotal evidence at this point and if I am going to take this hypothesis any further I will need the help of everyone who reads this. I won’t take much more than making some careful observations about the area where you live. 

Count the number of food serving or selling establishments that provide a significant amount of healthy choices. This may include full sized supermarkets including the super stores and warehouse stores. Then I want you to count the number of retailers selling fast food, fried food, sandwich stores and pharmacies. A Visual Essay.



So I took another walk on Wednesday, this time heading north of my home for 5 blocks. As I walked below is what I saw. I was consciously careful to get as few pictures of people that were identifiable. My focus is on motivating not denigrating anyone. I am here to support guide motivate and celebrate when you are successful. So I focused on the perpetrators of the evil rather than victims and by doing so I hope to raise a conversation we all need to have. 

What is in your neighborhood and what is the overall impact. You may have these industries and believe they have a positive economic impact but do they really? What is the cost in terms of health? How much are we spending to maintain an appearance of health and wealth rather than being well? Are you really well as  you drive up in your Lexus or Navigator looking good waiting for your prescriptions? The cost of poor health monetarily is astronomical but what about the intrinsic cost of declining health in this nation?

Depression, anxiety, and mental health are also related to poor physical health. And as our elderly population suffer with many forms of dementia and studies show we are spending more on that than cancer and heart issues we need to speak up and act out. I know you nor I know what to do as an individual so what I am suggesting is that we begin to have a conversation about health and wellness that becomes a movement for positive deliberate change. It is found that a mixture of Honey and Cinnamon cures most of the diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Ayurvedic as well as Yunani medicine have been using honey as a vital medicine for centuries. Scientists of today also accept honey as a very effective medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases. Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients.

Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, on its issue dated 17 January, 1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by Honey and Cinnamon as researched by western scientists.

HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, chappati, or other bread, instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also those who already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack.

Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heartbeat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as age the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalizes the arteries and veins.

INSECT BITES: Take one part honey to two parts of lukewarm water and add a small teaspoon of cinnamon powder, make a paste and massage it on the itching part of the body slowly. It is noticed that the pain recedes within a minute or two.

ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured.

In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week out of the 200 people so treated practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.

HAIR LOSS: Those suffering from hair loss or baldness, may apply a paste of hot olive oil, one tablespoon of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder before bath and keep it for approx. 15 min. and then wash the hair. It was found to be effective even if kept on for 5 minutes.

BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder.

TOOTHACHE: Make a paste of one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and five teaspoons of honey and apply on the aching tooth. This may be applied 3 times a day till the tooth stops aching.

CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder
mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to
reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10% within 2 hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken 3 times a day, any Chronic cholesterol is cured. As per information received in the said journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for 3 days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold and clear the sinuses.

INFERTILITY: Yunani and Ayurvedic Medicine have been using honey for thousands of years to strengthen the semen of men. If impotent men regularly take two tablespoon of honey before going to sleep, their problem will be solved.

In China, Japan and Far-East countries, women, who do not conceive and need to strengthen the uterus, have been taking cinnamon powder for centuries. Women who
cannot conceive may take a pinch of cinnamon powder in half teaspoon of honey
and apply it on the gums frequently throughout the day, so that it slowly mixes with the saliva and enters the body.

A couple in Maryland, USA, had no children for 14 years and had lost hope of having a child of their own. When told about this process, husband and wife started taking honey and cinnamon as stated above; the wife conceived after a few months and had twins at full term.

UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomachache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.

GAS: According to the studies done in India & Japan, it is revealed that if honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacteria and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food, relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.

INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ingredient, which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.

LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly arrests the ravages of old age. Take 4 spoons of honey, 1 spoon of cinnamon powder and 3 cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4 cup, 3 to 4 times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age.

Life spans also increases and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of Honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water. If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS: Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.

CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month 3 times a day.

FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon power in equal parts, are more alert and flexible.

Dr. Milton who has done research says that a half tablespoon honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3.00 p.m. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week.

BAD BREATH: People of South America, first thing in the morning gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water. So their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder taken in equal parts restore hearing.

*NOTE:The honey used needs to be REAL RAW UNPASTEURIZED HONEY. If it says PURE honey it is most likely pasteurized. It is best to only buy honey that says RAW or UNPASTEURIZED on the label. The difference is that the enzymes are all heated out of the pasteurized honey
 

I was questioned yesterday about any studies on this well read it for yourself and try it out if you want. I know some of this works because I have tried it and got some relief. I will say this many things or parents and grandparents did as natural cures are just now being validated by modern science. For instance my mom always used bleach in the dish water but it wasn't until the HIV epidemic that it was publicly validated as such by the world health organization. 

So no I do not have any efficacy studies but if I find them I will post. So Get Up Get Moving cause...

SIMPLE MOVEMENTS AT HOME


How Fit Can You Get


To Build Muscle  Burn Fat









So before we start, especially if you have not been very active I recommend:

1.      Schedule a checkup with  your doctor to make sure your physical condition will tolerate a moderate exercise routine.

2.      Start drinking plenty of water daily. I recommend you do this whether or not you are beginning an exercise routine. Your body needs water to function properly and rid itself of the toxins we ingest and absorb every day. Remember if you are thirsty you are already in the first stages of dehydration.

3.      Wear comfortable clothing that is loose and allows you to move easily without restrictions.

4.      Warm up the muscles you will be training during your routine. This can be accomplished by walking, moving your arms in a circular motion, jumping jacks, sitting and standing repeatedly, or using a jump rope. Blood flow to the muscles is important and movement increases blood flow.

5.      Stretch your muscles without straining them. Touching your toes, flexing your neck, reaching for the ceiling, bending at the waist, holding one bent leg in your hand behind you and pushing your leg against your hand, are all good ways to stretch your muscles without strain and injury. If you feel pain rather than just discomfort stop.

Gathering Your Equipment

1.      You will need two equally weighted objects such as small weights, water bottles, canned goods, bricks, or anything else that you are able to hold in your hands comfortably.

2.      A sturdy chair that is able to support your weight without moving or collapsing.
3.      One strong bath towel
4.      2 tennis balls
5.      One stretch band
6.      One exercise ball

*Note these items may be easily stored without changing the dynamics of the room by hogging up much space.

Safety Tips Before We Start:

1.      Breathe regularly during the exercises. Inhale prior to lifting and exhale during the resistance motion of the exercise. Simply put exhale on the way up (positive) and inhale on the way down (negative).
2.      Control the weight using smooth steady slow motions rather rapidly jerking the weight up and down using gravity and momentum rather than your muscles.

3.      Do not lock your joints, particularly your elbows and knees. Keep them slightly bent throughout each motion.
4.      Always contract your abdomen throughout each motion in order to support your back.
5.      You will fell some discomfort, (burning sensation as the muscles heat up and lactic acid increases. This is a natural byproduct of exercise. However if you feel pain stop and apply ice to the affected area.)
Strength Exercises

Ball Squeeze for Wrist and Forearm

1.      Hold a tennis ball in each hand or you may do one hand at a time.
2.      Slowly squeeze the tennis ball as  hard as you are able and hold for 1-3 seconds
3.      Slowly relax and allow your hand to open fully.
4.      Exhale as you squeeze and inhale as you release.
5.      Repeat 12-15 times = 1 set
6.      Do 3 – 5 sets.

Wall Push Ups (If you are not able to do floor pushups) for Chest and Triceps

1.      Face a wall, while standing a little further than arms length apart and feet at shoulders width
2.      Lean forward and place your palms flat against the wall at shoulder height and shoulder width apart.
3.      Tighten your abdomen, slowly bend your elbows and allow your upper body to move slowly towards the wall.
4.      Exhale on the way up and inhale on the way down.
5.      Slowly push yourself back to the starting position without locking your elbows and squeezing the muscles in your chest and triceps.
6.      Repeat 12 -15 times = 1 set
7.      Do 3 – 5 sets

Shoulder Press for Shoulders and Upper Back

1.      Sit upright in your chair or stand with back straight, knees slightly bent and feet shoulder width apart
2.      Hold your weighted item at your sides by your shoulders palms facing forward.
3.      Tighten your abdomen and slowly raise both arms simultaneously over your head as far as you can go without locking your elbows.
4.      Slowly lower the weight to shoulder height.
5.      Exhale on the way up and inhale on the way down.
6.      Repeat 12 -15 times = 1 set
7.       Do 3-5 sets.

Front Lateral Raise for Shoulders and Upper Back

1.      Sit upright in your chair or stand with back straight, knees slightly bent and feet shoulder width apart.
2.      Hold your weighted item with palms facing back of chair with arms full extended towards the floor.
3.      Tighten your abdomen, elbow slightly bent, palms facing the floor as you slowly raise your arms simultaneously to shoulder height.
4.      Slowly lower the weight back towards the floor until arms are in the starting position.
5.      Exhale on the way up and inhale on the way down
6.      Repeat 12 -15 times = 1 set
7.       Do 3-5 sets.

Side Lateral Raises for Shoulders and Small Muscles in the Neck and Upper Back

1.      Sit upright in your chair or stand with back straight, knees slightly bent and feet shoulder width apart.
2.      Hold your weighted item with palms facing inward towards each other with arms full extended towards the floor.
3.      Tighten your abdomen, elbow slightly bent, palms facing the floor as you slowly raise your arms simultaneously to shoulder height.
4.      Slowly lower the weight back towards the floor until arms are in the starting position.
5.      Exhale on the way up and inhale on the way down
6.      Repeat 12 -15 times = 1 set
7.       Do 3-5 sets.

Shoulder Shrug for Shoulders and Upper Back

1.      Sit upright in your chair or stand with back straight, knees slightly bent and feet shoulder width apart.
2.      Hold your weighted item with palms facing inward towards each other with arms full extended towards the floor.
3.      Tighten your abdomen, with elbows slightly bent, raise your shoulders without bending your arms beyond the starting position as if shrugging in response to someone.
4.      Slowly lower the weight back towards the floor until arms are in the starting position.
5.      Exhale on the way up and inhale on the way down
6.      Repeat 12 -15 times = 1 set
7.       Do 3-5 sets.

This is enough for one day especially if you are just getting started. I recommend using lightweight to start and increasing as you become more comfortable and the workout becomes easier. This is why using water bottles is provides more versatility. You may change the weight but increasing or decreasing the amount of water in the bottle. These 6 simple exercises will increase strength and flexibility in your upper body. 

Tomorrow I will focus on the lower body with exercises that will not only increase strength but balance as well. This is extremely important as we age. If you have not remained active your balance will probably be compromised to some degree or another. Since our bones lose much of the flexibility of our youth falling frequently leads to breaking bones particularly hips. This frequently is the beginning of diminishing health as the immobility and isolation lead to more serious complications including depression.
